1 each ‘59 Edsel Villager and ‘66 Ford Galaxie 500 7-litre.
Limited angles, as they’re not open today.

Yes and yes please.

I don’t know what he’s asking. I can find out, but haven’t done so as yet. I’m expecting the 7-litre is worth just a taaad more than the Edsel, but they’re both bedraggled enough they’re probably juuuust out of RamblinRover irresponsible decision range. It vexes me.

Even the 7-liter isn’t the collectible that a big block Chevy or Mopar is, so the prices aren’t too silly.
Hard to tell through the rain/fence, but they both look decent, yet aren’t trailer queens.

A 428FE
isn’t a 427FE
, but will it go like hell? Yes. Yes it would.

On the street, you might as well have the 428 unless you like fiddling with lifters. The 427 is for racing and dick-measuring contests (forged crank solid lifter blah blah blah)

The bore/stroke difference and slight compression ratio difference make a little bit of a thing, but the difference between them at 4/10ths (about as much as you’d wring them out) is not that much.
They’re both a little icy;
it’s cold out today, and rainy. Both have some chrome blemishes, but the brightwork on either (except for I think a couple missing letters on the Ed) is generally in a little better shape than mine.

Oh yeah - I’m not suggesting they’re equivalent at 10/10ths (or even 8/10ths) but for cruising that 428 would be reeeeaalllll nice.

I even like the color on the Edsel.

chubchubchubchubchubchubchubchubchub.
I’m recalling James May talking about a tingle in the root of one’s vegetables. A high compression
428 will provide it.

My brother’s wife is expecting, and their Astro and Camry are both a little long in the tooth. I’ve been telling him he needs a family car in the shape of an Edsel wagon. Strangely, he thinks I’m crazy or lying.
I’m both, but he should play along more.

A couple of years ago, I went to Mecum in Schaumburg on a Saturday, just for giggles. The real fun was outside the building, where the cars were lined up around the lot waiting to roll across the block.
For about 25 minutes, I just ambled alongside two cars - a ‘62 Ford with a 406/405, immediately followed by a ‘62 Pontiac “bubbletop” with a built 421. They were both just idling (duh), but they both sounded glorious - and quite a bit different. The 406 had a perfect, deep, loping rumble, while the Pontiac was clearly pretty high strung.

Right now, my 289 Galaxie is technically the biggest displacement I’ve owned, and that’s just dumb. It punches above its weight, but c’mon now. #400cubesorbust

You gotta hit 300 at least!
I haven’t gotten to 400, either - 394 is my max, with a handful more between 300 and 350.

I’d shatter 300 just buying the Edsel - a 361 was standard.

I’m curious as to what the ask is for both - as well as more details on them (especially whether the drivetrains are original or not because that’s always a thing to me).
Not that I’m in a position to buy either one, just curious.

The biggest point of interest re: the Edsel is whether it’s a nine-passenger or a six-passenger: the latter are about three times as common.

What are the chances it has the E-400/Super Express?
![]() 02/20/2019 at 20:27 |
|
The Express in other Edsels
was a 332, the peon option was the Ranger V8 or Economy Six, but according to Wikipedia the 361 (Super Express/ Edsel 400) was standard in all the Villager wagons throughout production. So, unless somebody swapped it, 100%.

Did not know that, assumed a straight six was standard. Kind of generous of Ford, that was one good reason to opt for the clearly failing/soon to be orphan brand instead of the more reputable choices.

Edsels were kind of meant to be well appointed Ford’s with blue-collar power and convenience options , vs. auntie’s or Mr. Businessman’s Mercury. The GMC to Ford's Chevy, not the Buick. I think they finally started to hit the jackpot with that market in the 60s with their trucks... and the rest, as they say, is history.
1958 was the wrong time and Edsel was the wrong vehicle, but it was nice.
